Summer Driver Education classes will be held for 6 consecutive weeks starting on June 28, 2010 and finishing up on August 5, 2010. There are four programs from which to choose. Program I has driving on Mondays and Wednesdays with theory classes everyday from 9-10am. Program II has driving on Mondays and Wednesdays with theory class everyday from 11-12pm.  Program III has driving on Tuesdays and Thursdays with theory class everyday from 9-10am. Program IV has driving on Tuesdays and Thursdays with theory class everyday from 11-12pm.  Uninterrupted attendance is of the utmost importance because of the short 6 week summer session along with the strict regulations of the State Education Department and the Motor Vehicle Bureau. Make-up time for illness or other reasons (vacation, sports, work) will be extremely limited. Classes are not scheduled on Fridays.  All classes, theory and driving, will meet at Pittsford Mendon High School.

REGISTRATION AND COST

The Drivers' Education registration system is an exclusively a web-based program. On May 11, 2010, registration will begin promptly at 6:00 PM, via our online program at www.pittsdrivered.org.  There are 96 slots available on a first-come, first-serve basis; 48 are reserved for Sutherland district, and 48 are reserved for Mendon district students. Private school students residing in the Pittsford District will be based on their Sutherland or Mendon address.  The cost of the program is $475.  Once registered, you will need to drop a check off at either high school (Counseling Office @ Mendon, Main Office @ Sutherland) by Friday, May 14th or you will be dropped from the course. Checks should be made out to PITTSFORD CENTRAL SCHOOLS. Any registration cancellations must be communicated to the Driver Education Coordinator by Wednesday, June 23rd in order to be eligible for a refund.

ELIGIBILITY

Registration in classes being offered is subject to the availability of qualified instructors and school vehicles. Pittsford Central Schools will make every effort to accommodate all students who have enrolled. Students must be 16 AND have a valid permit or license by June 25, 2010.

Please make your decision when signing up for the Summer Session for a program that best fits your schedule. If you will be involved with sports, work, a family vacation or a school play, and it will interfere with your Driver Education schedule, it may be wise to consider our Fall or Spring programs rather than risk not being able to successfully complete the Summer program.

PROGRAM

Students are required by the State of New York to participate in a 48-hour course of instruction. This includes 24 hours of classroom instruction (theory classes) and 24 hours of driving and observation (car classes) – all within the 6 weeks of our course. The State will not issue the MV-285 Certification of Completion unless the 48 hours have been completed. The Certificate of Completion allows a 17 year old to obtain his/her senior license and drive at night. It also provides a certificate to your insurance company, which should provide you with a discount.

ABSENCE POLICY

Uninterrupted attendance is of the utmost importance because of the strict time requirements of the course. Make-up time for illness or other reasons (vacation, sports, work) is very limited.  Students must take all theory and driving classes. Some absences are allowed, but must be made up.

Theory Classes - a student may only miss and make up a total of 4 theory classes over the course of the summer.  They must all be made up during the program - at the discretion of your theory class instructor.  The make ups may be on any given weekday after 2:00pm, at the halfway point of the program (July 16th) and/or at the end of the program (August 6th).  Each classroom make up hour will carry a charge of $10.

Driving Classes - a student may miss and make-up only two total driving classes during the course.  Your instructor will make every effort to enable you to do so within the regular program at no charge.  However, if your driving make up cannot be completed in that manner and is scheduled outside the regular class schedule – it will carry a charge of $25 per make up.

SIGN UP PROCESS

The sign up procedure is handled at our website, http://www.pittsdrivered.org.  On Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 at 6:00 p.m., the website will go live for registrations.

To register at the website, you must first create an account prior to the live registration on May 11th.  You will need to fill out certain items of personal information, including your complete name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and your school presently attended.  Once you have created this account on the website, you will then be ready to register on May 11th when the site goes live.

If a program fills up you may choose to be placed on a waiting list.  Waitlists will be maintained until Friday, June 25th, 2010. If you are bumped up from the waitlist into the program prior to this date we will still ask you to make your payment within 3 days.  If you are called on June 25th you will be asked to make your payment on that day.

After signing up for a program, the website will allow you to view your schedule. This information will contain the dates and times of all your classes.
