Winter/Spring Driver Education classes will be held between January 25, 2010 and May 25, 2010. There are three programs from which to choose. Program I has driving classes after school, Program II has Saturday car classes and Program III has Sunday car classes. The classroom portion of the program is taught 3 times on Mondays at Mendon (4:00, 5:30, 7:00) and twice on Tuesdays at Sutherland (5:30, 7:00).  Uninterrupted attendance is of the utmost importance because of the strict regulations of the State Education Department and the Motor Vehicle Bureau. Make-up time for illness is limited and time out of the course for vacation, sports, or work is very difficult and sometimes costly to reschedule. Classes will not be held during school vacations.

REGISTRATION AND COST

The Drivers' Education registration system is exclusively a web-based program.  On December 8, 2009, registration will begin at 6:00 PM, via our online program.  There are 124 slots available on a first-come, first-serve basis; 62 are reserved for Sutherland district, and 62 are reserved for Mendon district.  Private school students residing in the Pittsford District are eligible according to their Mendon or Sutherland address.  Prior to registering for classes, you must first create an online account by going to the website and filling out certain items of personal information, including your complete name (as it appears/will appear on your permit/license), address, phone number, e-mail address, and your school presently attended. Once you have created this account, you will then be ready for the December 8th registration to select from the available Programs, and the respective theory and car classes within. 

 

The course will cost $400 and, once your registration is confirmed, you will need to drop the check off at either the Counseling Office at Mendon High School or the Main Office at Sutherland High School within 3 days or your registration will be dropped. Checks should be made out to PITTSFORD CENTRAL SCHOOLS. Any registration cancellations must be communicated to the Driver Education Coordinator by Friday, January 15, 2010 in order to be eligible for a full refund.

ELIGIBILITY

Registration in classes being offered is subject to the availability of qualified instructors and school cars. Pittsford Central Schools will make every effort to accommodate all students who have enrolled. Students must be 16 years of age and have a valid learner’s permit by January 22, 2010.

 

Please make your decision when signing up for the Winter/Spring Semester for a program that best fits your schedule. If you will be involved with sports, work, or a school musical, and it will interfere with your Driver Education schedule, it may be wise to postpone this course until the summer rather than risk not being able to successfully complete the program.  Again, uninterrupted attendance is of the utmost importance because of the strict regulations of the State Education Department.  Make-up time for illness is limited and time out of the course for vacation, sports, or work is very difficult and can be costly to reschedule.

PROGRAM

Students are required by the State of New York to participate in a 48-hour course of instruction. This includes 24 hours of classroom instruction (theory class) and 24 hours of driving and observation (car classes). The State will not issue the MV-285 Certification of Completion unless the entire 48 hours have been completed. The MV-285 Certificate of Completion allows a 17 year old to obtain his/her senior license and drive at night. It also provides a certificate to your insurance company, which should provide you with a discount.

ABSENCE POLICY

Students are required to take all theory classes and driving classes. Any absence must always be made up.

• Theory Classes - a student may only miss two total theory classes which must be made up at the end of the session.  The first miss/make up is at no cost, but the 2^nd one will be charged $25.  If a student misses a third class, he/she will not be eligible to receive the MV-285 Certificate of Completion (MV-285). There are three classes held on Monday and two classes on Tuesday from which to choose, when registering.
  
  
• Driving Classes - a student may miss and make up two driving classes during the course with no charge.  Any absence after the two will have to be made up at a rate of $25 per class. Students are encouraged to reschedule their class in advance on the website if they know they will be absent. By doing this, a make-up can be done before the anticipated absence. The student is responsible for going to the website prior to the absence to release their slot and to schedule a make-up class. Please do not wait until the end of the session to schedule make-ups for earlier absences.  We may not be able to accommodate your needs and will not be eligible to receive the MV-285 Certificate of Completion.

SIGN UP PROCESS

The sign up procedure is exclusively handled at our website, www.pittsdrivered.org.  On Tuesday, December 8^th at 6:00 p.m., the website will go live for registrations from those students who have previously established a driver education account.  The program tends to fill up quickly so it is a good idea to be ready to register on December 8^th at 6:00pm sharp. 

 

If a program fills up, you may choose to be placed on a waiting list.  If a registered student cancels fails to produce payment, the next person in line on the waitlist will be called by the Driver Education Coordinator.  Waitlists will be maintained until Thursday, January 21, 2010.  If you are bumped up from the waitlist into the program, please ensure that you make your payment within three days of the change or before the program starts, whichever is shorter. If you fail to make your payment, you will be dropped from the list entirely and have to start all over again.

 

Once registered, the website will allow you to view your theory and driving schedule for the entire course.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

Program I - After School:   This program offers 2 hour car classes after school on Mondays at Mendon, and Tuesdays , Wednesdays & Thursdays at both schools for 12 weeks from 3:30-5:30.  There are a total of 28 spots in this program.

• Driving Classes: Students will be able to choose a 2 hour driving class at either high school and will be picked up in front of that high school at the time and day that they choose.
• Theory Classes: There are three classes held on Monday at Mendon High School (4:00, 5:30, 7:00) in room 124 and two classes on Tuesday at Sutherland High School (5:30, 7:00) in room 119 from which to choose when registering.  There is some flexibility in attendance between the 4:00, 5:30 and 7:00 classes on Mondays and the 5:30 and 7:00 classes on Tuesdays with the instructor’s permission.  Students cannot attend theory classes on different nights – Monday students must attend all Monday classes and Tuesday students must attend all Tuesday classes.  A complete list of date and time options for each program is listed below.

Program II - Saturdays: This program offers 2 hour car classes on Saturdays for 12 weeks. There are 48 spots in this program.

• Driving Classes: Students will be able to choose a 2 hour driving class starting at the following times: 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.  All Saturday classes will meet in the bus loop on the Sutherland Street side of Sutherland High School.
• Theory Classes: There are three classes held on Monday at Mendon High School (4:00, 5:30, 7:00) in room 124 and two classes on Tuesday at Sutherland High School (5:30, 7:00) in room 120 from which to choose when registering.  There is some flexibility in attendance between the 4:00, 5:30 and 7:00 classes on Mondays and the 5:30 and 7:00 classes on Tuesdays with the instructor’s permission.  However, students cannot attend theory classes on different nights – Monday students must attend all Monday classes and Tuesday students must attend all Tuesday classes.  A complete list of date and time options for each program is listed below.

Program III - Sundays: This program offers 2 hour car classes on Sundays for 16 weeks. There are 48 spots in this program.

• Driving Classes: Students will be able to choose a 2 hour driving class starting at the following times: 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.  All Sunday classes will meet in front of Mendon High School.
• Theory Classes: There are three classes held on Monday at Mendon High School (4:00, 5:30, 7:00) in room 124 and two classes on Tuesday at Sutherland High School (5:30, 7:00) in room 120 from which to choose when registering.  There is some flexibility in attendance between the 4:00, 5:30 and 7:00 classes on Mondays and the 5:30 and 7:00 classes on Tuesdays with the instructor’s permission.  However, students cannot attend theory classes on different nights – Monday students must attend all Monday classes and Tuesday students must attend all Tuesday classes.  A complete list of date and time options for each program is listed below.

The Drivers' Education website will handle all of your program management needs. Once again, the website is located at www.pittsdrivered.org and handles all aspects of registration for the program.

 

You may log into your account from any computer with internet access.  Your data is maintained at a secure location in the district on a secure server, but it is your responsibility to protect the security of your username and password.  Do not give them to anyone!  We cannot be responsible for any compromises of information if you allow your username and password to fall into someone else’s hands.
